Marcus Whitfield

Marcus Whitfield

History teacher & mythology hobbyist

B.A. History, Bristol

Marcus Whitfield teaches history at a comprehensive school just outside Bristol. He fell into Greek mythology as a teenager after stumbling on a battered Penguin edition of the Iliad in a charity shop, and he has been reading around the subject ever since.

He writes the hero and creature articles on Old Greek Gods because those are the stories his students respond to first. He's especially interested in how the same myth survives in different sources, and what that tells us about how the Greeks themselves told their own past.

Marcus is not a professional classicist. He's a hobbyist with a teaching habit, and he tries to write the kind of articles he wishes he'd had as a curious fifteen-year-old.
