About the Author
Thomas L. Miller
Thomas L. Miller is a historian and writer with a deep passion for ancient Greek civilization: its gods, heroes, myths, philosophy, and the extraordinary culture that produced so much of what we consider foundational to the modern world. He is the author and editor of the Old Greek Gods blog, where he writes in-depth articles exploring the full sweep of Greek history and mythology for curious readers of all backgrounds.
With more than fifteen years of independent study in classical history, Thomas brings both scholarly rigor and genuine enthusiasm to every subject he covers. He believes that the stories the ancient Greeks told, from Achilles' rage and Odysseus's ingenuity to Persephone's descent and Prometheus's gift, are not dusty relics but living narratives that speak directly to the human condition. The myths of ancient Greece explore the same questions we wrestle with today: What do we owe each other? What is justice? What does it mean to live well in the face of mortality?
Thomas's approach combines archaeological evidence, primary sources in translation, and a wide reading of modern classical scholarship to produce articles that are both accessible and substantive. He is particularly interested in the intersection of myth and history: the ways that legendary narratives encode real historical memory. He is also drawn to the surprising relevance of ancient philosophical ideas to contemporary life. He is equally at home writing about the technical achievements of the Parthenon's architects and the theological subtleties of the Eleusinian Mysteries.
Old Greek Gods exists because Thomas believes that access to high-quality, enthusiastic writing about ancient history should not be limited to university classrooms. The ancient Greeks themselves were fiercely committed to the idea that wisdom should be pursued in public, in conversation, and by anyone willing to think carefully. This blog is his contribution to that tradition.
